Salmon – My favorite no more

Salmon sashimi. My favorite. When I’m enjoying it, I don’t have second thoughts of its beneficial effects, good for the heart, the cardio-vascular system. In fact, salmon is an enormous source of omega-3 fatty acids.

But wait, the report from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) is quite disturbing. It says that salmon can contain unsafe doses of cancer-causing substances called polychlorinated biphenyls or PCBs. This is more pronounced if your salmon came from your nearby grocery.

It was noted that salmon fish bought from the grocery stores are farmed. What is disturbing was that the report said that farmed salmons contain sixteen times the cancer-causing substances than those fished from the wild.

The EPA or the Environmental Protection Agency regards these levels of PCBs as health hazards. It would be tolerable, however if these were taken in no more than once in 30 days.

The FDA or Food and Drug Administration is investigating the main source of these cancer-causing substances and they are the fish meal that these cultivated salmons are eating.
